Get Your Eyebrows Back

Author: emotionally driven

Eyebrow transplantation is a type of hair transplantation.  It is the artful redistribution of your lifetime donor dominant hair to your eyebrows.  The doctor transfers follicles destined to grow permanently in the donor area, which is from the area behind your ear, and transplants these follicles into your eyebrow areas.

When the doctor transplants follicle of hair from the back to create your new eyebrows, in the vast majority of patients, those hairs will continue to grow for life where they are transplanted.  The goal is not just to improve your appearance now, but to do the work in such a way that you’ll continue to look good 10,20,30 years from now.

Lets talk about the actual procedure.  Before you begin, the doctor will discuss the shape of your eyebrows with you.  He will design the shape of your eyebrows based on the shape of your face and bone structure… so that they will look natural when they grow in and many years from now.  Each person’s face is different.  The doctor will use an eyebrow pencil and show you the design before he does anything.

Once you and the Doctor have agreed on the shape and location of your eyebrows, the procedure will begin under a local anesthetic.  The doctor will comb through the hair in the donor area to select the best quality and quantity of hair for your restoration.  The donor hair will be clipped to the skin, and the doctor will make a small incision and remove a segment of tissue.  The area is then closed hair to hair with one continuous dissolvable suture.  If you heal like most patients, this usually leaves a thin scar which is hidden by your existing hair.

During the procedure the doctor will be assisted by clinical technicians.  The clinical staff will take the segment of tissue the doctor removed, and under a high powered microscope, trim it into various sizes of follicular units.  A follicular unit is a very small segment of tissue with 1 or two hairs in it.

The doctor will create the recipient sites in the eyebrow area.  These are tiny angled openings into which the clinical staff will preliminary place each follicular unit.  The angle of each opening is very important because it controls the direction in which the hair will grow.  The doctor will use your finest hairs to create a soft natural look.

During the procedure you will be sitting in a comfortable reclining chair and can watch a movie or just lay back and rest.  You can get up and stretch your legs or use the restroom at any time.

What can you anticipate after the procedure?

For a couple of days there will be some redness and there may be some swelling.  Tiny crusts will form at the recipient sites, and these will fall of after 7-10 days.

You will be able to pencil in your eyebrows after 48 hours.  You will be able to take a shower as soon as you get home; just don’t let the water run straight on the grafts for 48 hours.  Also, no strenuous exercise for the first 48 hours.

Once a hair is transplanted, it goes into a resting phase.  The transplanted hairs, which were clipped just prior to the procedure, will naturally fall out within the first few weeks.  So for the first 3 months you will look as you did.  After the third month the hair will begin to grow.  The average person’s hair grows about ½ per month, so in 6 months you will see a good visual result and in about a year you’ll see the full visual result.  It is a slow, subtle, natural transition.

The hair that is being transplanted will continue to grow.  So you will want to trim it once or twice a week.

The degree of pain or discomfort experienced by patients during or after the procedures varies.  During the procedure you will be given a local anesthetic.  After the procedure, the doctor will send you home with medications for any post operative discomfort.  Many patients find that they do not need to take any medication at all after their hair transplant procedure.
